Last weekend was my Gran’s 80th birthday and as part of her present I decided to take my Mam and Gran for afternoon tea. So yesterday off we went to VIP Tea’s in High Spen for the most perfect afternoon!
If you’re looking for somewhere to go for afternoon tea in the North East / Newcastle – I can’t recommend this place enough. It’s a vintage style tea room with decoration that has made me want to start an antique tea party selection. With mismatched chairs, embroidered napkins, floral bunting and the prettiest tea pots, cups and saucers. The detail I loved most was that each cup and saucer matched each other, but were completely different to the next cup and saucer set.
Now for the main part, the afternoon tea. When we arrived we were served with a huge pot of tea (you can also choose coffee if you wish) and a menu of sandwich fillings for us each to choose from. We decided to choose a different filling each so we could share. After saying we like the sound of every filling on the menu, we finally chose chicken, bacon and mayo; ham and pease pudding (my fave); and tuna mayo.
Next up was the most amazing selection of homemade treats. Scones with clotted cream, jam and fresh strawberries served in tiny tea cups; caramel shortbread, lemon drizzle cake and gorgeous meringues with caramel and cream; ending with tasty victoria sponge cake with jam filling.
Two pots of tea later we couldn’t possibly eat any more (although we did take home a doggy bag!) so off we went home – I could have happily spent all day sitting in VIP Tea’s! It is one of the nicest tea rooms I have been to with the most delicious home made cakes including gluten free too. If you’re in the north east then definitely have a try for yourself!
